How to Prune a Topiary Ball | Complete Tutorial

In this video, I show you how to prune a topiary ball and how to get it perfect every time. I'll be using shears and secateurs to get the shrub into a ball shape, and will share with you what techniques I use. You can prune a variety of shrubs into ball shapes, from something small to a large feature shrub in a range of species and varieties. These include boxwood, yew, privet, ligustrum, buxus, conifer, bay, holy, as well as other deciduous and evergreen shrubs. I prune multiple golden privets, which I have had to do some hard cutbacks in the past to get them into the ball you see today. I will be taking off this year's growth to bring it back to its shape, which will help maintain its lush, thick foliage.

This method is transferable to other evergreen and deciduous shrubs and can be adapted to create various other shapes. So once you have learnt this skill, you can create a variety of perfectly pruned formal shapes within your garden. Having this understanding for fine pruning work really makes other pruning jobs in the garden a lot easier and more enjoyable.
