The Norfolk Southern Memphis District hosts multiple run-through unit coal trains from BNSF. These trains haul thousands of tons of coal from the mines in the Powder River Basin of Wyoming to power plants in Kingston, TN, and Scherer, GA. The Kingston Fossil Plant, owned by the Tennessee Valley Authority, was built to provide electricity to the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Georgia Power's Robert W. Scherer Power Plant near Juliette, GA, is the most powerful coal-fired power plant in the United States. This video features a selection of loaded and empty unit coal trains traversing the NS Memphis District (West End) near the suburbs of Memphis, TN, in early 2026.
