Bobby Hansen scored his only points of the night, four straight free throws in the last 10 seconds, to seal a thrilling victory over Indiana. It was Hawks' first win in the 10-year existence of Assembly Hall.
Kevin Boyle led the Hawks with 14 points, making 6 of 7 shots from the field. Kenny Arnold, Vince Brookins and Steve Krafcisin each scored 10 points. Iowa shot 46 percent for the game, after a strong 64% shooting in the 2nd half.
Isaiah Thomas, Indiana's usual offensive leader, only scored six points and committed four turnovers. He also intentionally fouled Hansen in the last seconds, setting up the two free throws, and fouling out of the game.
During halftime of the game, Frosty Mitchell interviews the women's track coach Jerry Hassard and women's tennis coach Cathy Ballard.
Indiana would win the Big Ten title at 14-4, and Iowa would finish one game back at 13-5. Indiana was a 3 seed in the NCAA tournament, and won the National Championship, and Isaiah Thomas would be named MVP of the tournament. Iowa lost in their first NCAA game at Wichita, Kansas against Wichita State (basically a home game for them).
