En avril à Paris (April in Paris) is a French chanson written by Charles Trenet and Walter Eiger. A jazzy piano arrangement of the song was discovered by pianist Marc-André Hamelin through a vinyl recording from the 50s called “Mr. Nobody Plays Trenet”. It was revealed only recently that the “Mr. Nobody” in the recording was actually the famous Bulgarian pianist Alexis Weissenberg. As Hamelin reflects on Weissenberg: “It is easy to see why Weissenberg chose to adopt a pseudonym for this recording. At that time a serious classical pianist dabbling in such trivialities as popular song would most likely have been compromising his own career. How times have changed. This kind of thing is welcomed, even encouraged, by record companies now.”
