Chinese top-tier football began in 1951 with the National Football Championship, evolving through several formats and names before becoming the Chinese Super League (CSL) in 2004. In the early decades, state-run teams and regional selections dominated, with clubs like Liaoning, Bayi (Army), and Beijing achieving national success. Liaoning was especially dominant during the 1980s and early '90s, winning multiple league titles and even capturing the 1990 Asian Club Championship, making them the first Chinese team to win a continental title. From 2011 to 2017, Guangzhou Evergrande dominated with an unprecedented seven consecutive titles, backed by strong investment and foreign coaching talent like Marcello Lippi and Luiz Felipe Scolari. However, financial instability struck in the early 2020s, with clubs like Jiangsu Suning (2020 champions) dissolving shortly after winning the league. By 2024, Shanghai Port had become a new force, winning consecutive titles and leading a more sustainable, restructured league aiming to develop local talent and stabilize after a turbulent financial period.
