This conversation between writer Ben Lerner and Carol Mancusi-Ungaro, Melva Bucksbaum Associate Director for Conservation and Research, considers how rules, codes, and instructions do not just create works of art, but also influence the way that these objects and images change over time. The discussion touches on how digital technologies challenge conventional wisdom about art conservation and preservation and includes consideration of specific works in the Whitney’s collection on view in the exhibition Programmed: Rules, Codes, and Choreographies in Art, 1965-2018.
Ben Lerner is the author of many books and a recipient of fellowships from the Fulbright, Guggenheim, and MacArthur Foundations. He currently works as Distinguished Professor of English at Brooklyn College. Lerner’s forthcoming novel, The Topeka School, will be published in the fall of 2019.
