What If Shanks Died When Saving Luffy in Episode One ?

The opening chapters of One Piece started off not with a great raid or an intense battle, but a simple promise "Return this hat to me, when you become a great pirate." But what if there was no body to return the hat to, what if Shanks died in the process, does that mean Luffy would die as well ? Or would nothing have changed at all. I've come up with three theories on what would happen if Shanks had died when saving Luffy in episode one.
