Though this video talks about grandfather clocks, the ideas and concepts will apply to all mechanical clocks. If you ask any competent clock repair person they will tell you that
general maintenance is critical to a well functioning clock. After a period of time your clock will need a cleaning. A cleaning means it should be taken apart completely, cleaned, address wear, re-assembled, oiled with a quality clock oil, and adjusted. This should be performed at around the 10 year period though depending on the atmospheric conditions possibly more often. If you have noticed the chiming starting to slow down in its cadence try putting a little extra pressure on the chime train weight (usually the right hanging weight) with your finger. If this speeds it up a bit then it is a good sign that things have become sticky and there is friction happening causing the clock chime to slow. Also if you have been trying to speed up the clock with the pendulum bob and it still has not been keeping proper time, friction or sticky pivot areas are causing problems with regulating your clock, it may be time for a cleaning. There are many issues that will arise from a poorly maintained clock. There is no quick fix nor cheap option to getting it up and running properly again. If someone tells you there is then please do some more research about mechanical clock movements and find a expert that will give you good advice so you dont ruin a treasured family heirloom with bad advice.
