In 1984, "Dune" was considered a true blockbuster, with a budget that made almost every other film released around the same time green with envy. For example, "Return of the Jedi" had a $10 million lower budget, "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" had a $15 million lower budget, and "Beverly Hills Cop," which was released alongside "Dune" and completely overshadowed it at the box office, was as cheap as some arthouse films. The box office failures of "Dune" and "The Bounty" in 1984 greatly damaged producer Dino de Laurentiis' career. This is why he was unable to put "Total Recall" into production and had to trick Schwarzenegger into "Red Sonja," which became the actor's only failure in the 1980s.
