Northeastern China, or 'Manchuria' as many know it, has had a very tumultuous past. While it may feel like ages ago, much of the turmoil and tragedy took place within the lifetimes of many our our grandparents.
After the Japanese invaded China in the 1930's, they created a puppet state in Manchuria called 'Manchukuo'. They made what is present-day Changchun the capital, changing the name to 'Xinjing', or 'Shinkyo'.
In this video we look at the tram system that Imperial Japan built in Changchun and hop aboard as we take a trip down memory lane. Far from its peak, the Changchun tram is now down to only 2 lines - only 1 of which still exists from decades past. Line 54.
