Have we reached the limits of our old-fashioned summer vacations on the Mediterranean Sea now that heat waves and forest fires are becoming more frequent there? In a new episode of 'Front Line', reporter Bram Vermeulen follows the special fire department commando's tasked with keeping the millions of tourists on the Greek islands safe. Is mass travel to Greece still tenable?
On Rhodes in 2023, nearly twenty thousand tourists had to be evacuated due to forest fires that burned hotels and restaurants and destroyed more than 20% of all trees on the island. Yet, in July 2025, the island attracted a record half a million tourists. According to the commander of the fire department's special unit established after the devastating fires, an irresponsible situation has arisen on the islands. 'With half a million people on the island, you can be sure things will go wrong. We can't protect them.'
The tourist industry itself is contributing to the life-threatening situation that has arisen. Tourists use on average five times as much water as permanent residents. Many Greek islands also struggle with waste. Illegal trash burning is often the cause of forest fires. Moreover, the large financial interests in the tourism industry do not allow themselves to be curbed by regulations. Those who do try to go against this risk their lives.
