I took "Miss Victory," my 1970 V-code (440 6bbl) Roadrunner out for what was supposed to be another great week at the annual Cruisin the Coast, October 2022. As bad luck/timing would have it, it ran really badly right away. Since CtC is a week of showing, cruising, and occasionally "speed contests" w/classic cars, I was really disappointed as that is about the only vacation I take each year. So I went about checking all ignition contacts, wires and boots, spark plugs, and I changed the cap and rotor just in case. No improvements. Idle mixture screws, vacuum leaks, no help there.
That was about all I had time for, so I "compromised" and had to go through the week with my wife in our 1965 GTO Royal Bobcat 421 Tripower. I did change the 5 year old spark plugs, but ran into one that had boogered-up threads in the cast iron head, that wouldn't accept the new spark plug even though they were the same Autolite 85s I was replacing. So I ordered a collapsible thread chaser that lets me work the cutting threads past the threads in the head on the way IN, then expand the tool diameter and along with a dab of heavy grease, it did a good job of following the original threads and scraped them clean on the way back out, with the grease grabbing any debris. New plugs in and I thought that "fixed" the problem, and it was running better, but that didn't last past the 45 total minutes I drove around that night, hitting a local car show and so on, by the time I got home it was running bad again. IT TURNED OUT TO BE THE POWER VALVE in the center carb. Although I am diligent with the gas I use, almost ALWAYS NO ETHANOL premium, and using a fuel treatment when I must use ethanol polluted gas, I saw evidence of moisture in the fuel system, especially the POWER VALVE that I was going to replace anyway, it was "crusty" with an off-white residue. In its current state, 292°/.509 cam, headers, 6bbl, the 440 pulls about 11 inches of Hg vacuum, and not knowing what PV was in, I installed a #6.5 and pulled the fuel bowls off all 3 carbs, cleaned them all out, and put everything back together. Since I wasn't able to drive a long time or distance, I ran with the cutouts open, and I heard NO missing, popping, stumbling..The MAIN SYMPTOMs I was trying to eliminate were a JERKY power output at part throttle, I could feel and hear the driveline stress and relax rather than the smooth and steady application of power I should have had. That's all gone, the engine is idling fairly smooth, I have to adjust the 6 idle mixture screws and check the timing, An 850 RPM idle speed is my target. I'm SO HAPPY that this is resolved. Thanks for anyone who read this all the way through.
