How to Plant Bare Root Strawberries

In my opinion planting strawberries using bare root starts is the best way to go. Bare root Strawberry plants are inexpensive and if planted at the correct time they are a great way to establish a large strawberry patch.

In this week's video I take you through the process of planting bare root strawberries in your backyard garden.

Remember that when you plant June Bearing strawberries you should remove all of the blossoms for the first year to allow the plants to focus on growing strong plants.

If you are planting everbearing strawberries you should remove all of the blossoms until mid summer. You can let newly planted everbearing strawberries produce a late summer/fall crop of berries.

Soak your bare root strawberries in a bucket of water for a couple of hours before planting.
The most important part of planting bare root strawberries is getting the correct planting depth. Be sure to watch the video so you can see what that correct depth is.
Fan out the roots and plant the bare root strawberries in a nice sized hole with the bottom of the crown right at soil level.
Once you have planted your bare root strawberries be sure to water them well and feel free to use a liquid fertilizer like fish emulsion once or twice a month.
