For seven long years during the war in Syria, Mohammed Afif Nafieh was forced to dig mass graves for the regime of Bashar Al-Assad.
He witnessed horrific atrocities and, when he fled Syria, he shared what he had seen with the world at great risk to himself and his family.
His testimony at the German national court in Koblenz helped secure the convictions of two Syrian officials for war crimes in the first ever international trial on state torture in Syria. He offered powerful testimony before the US Congress and the British parliament. He was always masked for these appearances - until now.
MEE's Dania Akkad travelled to Germany recently to meet the man known by his family and friends as Abu Haitham, but for years publicly only as the gravedigger.
