War Time Pillbox in Fleetwood

While looking at Google maps for something we noticed this 'War Time Pillbox' marked, in a place that we've passed loads of times. So we thought we'd take a look and explore...

We're starting this strange expedition at Eros roundabout on the A585, so you can see exactly where to find this relic of the past. It's hidden in plain sight on the A585, the main road opposite the entrance to the popular Cala Gran holiday park.

The Fylde Coast does have a wide ranging connection to the first and second World Wars, so it's not entirely unusual to find a War Time pillbox here. Perhaps the strangest thing is that we'd never noticed it before!

The Pillbox is a Military Bunker and they were built during both wars - and used extensively during the First World War. Pillboxes were circular in design, similar to a pillbox containing tablets prescribed by a chemist – hence the name. It's estimated that less than 6000 of a total 28,000 pillboxes still survive. There's another one in Salisbury Woodlands next to Stanley Park which is a type 22 - and it looks just the same as this.
