What’s the best part of estate sales? Is it exploring new neighborhoods and getting a peek inside a collector’s home? Is it scoring great deals on vintage treasures and antiques? Is it discovering the stories of those who came before us and learning about their family history? Or is it the thrill of adding to our own collections and giving old things a new life?
Yes, yes, yes, and yes! In this video, we visit two exciting estate sales and experience all of that—at thrift store-prices!
Our first stop is a packed bungalow in Tacoma, Washington, where the aunts have left notes about Goofus Glass, a 1910s hair receiver, and other antiques that belonged to a family who journeyed west by covered wagon.
We pick up a 1930s uranium glass cake stand, a tiny one-cup teapot, and (of all things) an antique Listerine bottle. We plow through costume jewelry and a garden full of birdbaths and wicker, peruse a still very useful collector’s glass reference book, and meet a fun viewer who shares our taste in art books and pre-WWII Noritake!
On half-off day, we head to a water view home in Everett, Washington, where a 92-year-old left behind a house full of elegant, fun, beautiful, and practical vintage finds. Everything is now thrift-store priced, so we rush straight to the jewelry table, where we fill our bag with sterling pins, pressed coral, bone, and rhinestone pieces!
Then it’s on to the rest of the house, where listed art, spelter figures, and a splendid French dining suite tempt us… but the biggest bargains are in the kitchen, pottery, and glass! We consider restoring an important Swedish MCM art glass lamp but decide our time is better spent with a scarce 1930s Stangl plate, an Italian silk piano shawl, 1940s Chicken of the Sea promotional ware, and quirky glass novelties. We take in shelves of pretty porcelain, loads of linens, books, globes, and a cool Peanuts trunk that brings back childhood memories—before checking out with two bags full of treasures!
Back home, we unpack and review the haul, finding even more than we remembered! Our $170 investment should bring $500 worth of joy to our collector customers—and we’ve made memories to last from another great estate sale weekend.
