What constitutes the respectful and dignified care and display of human remains? As attitudes keep shifting, how do we, as museum curators and archaeologists, sensitively navigate the many different historical and contemporary perspectives and opinions?
This talk will draw on the latest research underway at the Chau Chak Wing Museum into the ethical care, treatment, interpretation and display of human remains, with a particular focus on Egypt. It will consider the perspectives of researcher, museum visitor, descent communities and museum professionals, as well as different cultural contexts and the ancient dead.
The talk will also address the legacies of colonial collecting practices inherited by museum curators, as well as other ethical issues posed by modern scientific analysis and restitution.
