R11 BMT 1 train, from 57th Street-7th Avenue to Brighton Beach via Brighton Express.
The R11 was a prototype subway car built in 1949. The contract would've included 400 cars, but was canceled due to the 2nd Avenue Subway project being canceled as well, leading to only 10 cars/1 set being built. Nicknamed the 'Million Dollar Train', each of the 10 cars costed $100K to build; this was the 2nd subway car to be built by Budd, the 1st being the BMT Zephyr. The next up were the R32, M3 'Almond Joys' operated by SEPTA, São Paulo Metro's A Stock in collab with Mafersa, Pioneer IIIs, LIRR M1 & M3 (and as M1A & M3A variants on Metro North, plus the M2), a handful of the older Tokyu cars, Universal Transit Vehicle operated by SubwayLink in Baltimore and also previously by MetroRail in Miami, and many more. Also to be featured later on the R15, The R11s had porthole door windows. The cars were overhauled in 1964 under contract R34 with new silver doors and components, allowing it to run with other SMEE consists. As with many other prototypes, frequent maintenance was required to keep the cars running even after the overhaul. The R11s were retired after a yard accident in 1977, leading to all but car 8013 in the consist to be scrapped; 8013 was also damaged, but received repairs before becoming a part of the NYTM collection. It operates during special occasions as part of the TOMM (Train of Many Metals) consist, making it's latest appearance during the 2025 Parade of Trains event along with R32 no. 3360 & 3361, R10 no. 3184 & 3189, and R30 no. 8506. Note: The marker lights and express/local lamps remain inoperable on the real life one.
The original Pre GOH R11 version was used instead of the GOH (R34) one as the rollsigns on it is not functional. The R16 also ran on this route using the BMT 1 designation too but began at Canal Street.
The BMT 1 was assigned to the Brighton Line in 1924 when numbers were given, while the Franklin Avenue Line became the 7. It was renamed to QB, QJ, and QT in 1960 when the then newer R27s and R30s were introduced into service; double letters were used for local services at that time. QQ was never used. The single letter Q was also used prior, but discontinued in 1962 and merged with QB service. QT was eliminated in 1968 and QJ in 1973, while QB was renamed to the current Q train in 1985 after the MTA eliminated double letter designation. The R11 made it's first run on the 2nd Avenue Subway in 2017.
In memory of Dr Martin Luther King Jr; your "I Have a Dream" speech will never be forgotten.
