Bank Holiday Monday 25th August saw LNER A1 No. 60163 'Tornado' head to the West Country, at the head of the 'Devon Belle', promoted by UK Railtours. This ran from Paddington to Exeter and return, with the outward leg traversing the Berks & Hants before joining the West of England line at Yeovil for an ascent of Honiton Bank. The return to the Capital was much more straightforward, returning to Paddington via Taunton, Newbury and Reading. This would also be the A1's final Mainline run in BR Blue, as the loco is planned to be repainted during its upcoming overhaul.
Unfortunately, the forecast for the day wasn't looking great, and it clearly showed at the first location - Crewkerne. Despite this, the crowds gathered to watch the Pacific power through the station. The water stop at Chard Junction allowed us to overtake, and for the second shot we opted for Axminster. The inclement weather didn't let up, although the A1's performance certainly didn't disappoint!
Having spent several hours in Exeter, we pick up the return journey at Tiverton Parkway, where thankfully the rain had given way to sunshine! The Pacific accelerates away from the pathing stop at Tiverton Junction, passing through the station under the shadow of a beautiful rainbow! Our final sequence comes from the water stop at Taunton. We're able to capture a few close ups of 'Tornado' before filming the subsequent departure.
