On March 18th, the Business and Society Program proudly hosted the 2025 Haitkin Lecture, featuring NYU Stern’s own social psychologist and Thomas Cooley Professor of Ethical Leadership, Jonathan Haidt. Haidt opened the lecture by revisiting the argument at the heart of his global bestseller, The Anxious Generation — that the rapid shift from a “play-based childhood” to a “phone-based childhood” between 2010 and 2015 has profoundly altered human development worldwide. From there, Haidt expanded the conversation beyond mental health, exploring the wide-reaching consequences of phone-based life on education, attention, creativity, the economy, family dynamics, and democracy.
