(19 Nov 2019) A Russian court has upheld an earlier ruling to keep a former US Marine in a Moscow jail at least until the end of the year as he faces espionage charges.
Michigan resident Paul Whelan was arrested at a hotel in the Russian capital last December.
Whelan, who also holds British, Irish and Canadian citizenship, denies the charges of spying for the U.S. that his lawyers said stem from a sting operation.
Whelan's lawyer has said his client was handed a flash drive that had classified information on it that he didn't know about.
A spying conviction in Russia carries a possible prison sentence of up to 20 years.
