A day after an 11-inning win in the opener of the '79 NL Championship Series, the Cincinnati Reds again host the Pittsburgh Pirates in a Game Two matinee. Pirates skipper Chuck Tanner selected right-hander Jim Bibby as his starter. Bibby had enjoyed a good year in a dual starter-reliever role, winning twelve games and losing 4, with an ERA of 2.81. Meanwhile, Cincinnati manager John McNamara gave the nod to 22-year-old Frank Pastore, who finished the regular season with a mark of 6-7 and a 4.25 ERA, in this must-win game before a Wednesday afternoon crowd of around 55,000. The best-of-five series moves to Pittsburgh after this.
Although the game was televised nationally over NBC-TV, this is the local KDKA-TV broadcast with Pirates announcers Milo Hamilton, Lanny Frattare, and Nellie Briles. (Local radio and TV broadcasts of MLB’s League Championship Series were permitted in 1979).
