Animal health is intricately connected to interactions with the microbial communities—or microbiota—they host. The combination of these microbial communities, their genomes, genetic transcripts, and metabolites; the features of their habitat; and their interactions with their host and habitat create a microbiome.

In this session, Dr. Griffin provides an overview of the recent advances in biochemistry, computation, bioinformatics, culturomics, and machine learning that enable researchers to study animal microbiomes in situ using meta-omics approaches. Findings from these studies help researchers understand the associations between microbiomes and host health, identify targets for nutritional interventions, and develop new biotic solutions.
