Dear friends,
It is my pleasure to share a new video with you of a song I love.
This is ❤️Barry Ryan & 🎶The Verge ~When I Was A Child~ by Barry Ryan & William McKellar and a video I created in 4K for this with the remastered audio✨by Erhard with many thanks.
This video was created in loving memory of Barry and is shared under the terms of fair use, no copyright infringement is intended.
This song was released on his 5th solo album called Sanctus, Sanctus Hallelujah from 1972 but recorded earlier.
I will add the lyrics as I heard them for you as a comment.
I created this video by adding a backdrop of different night sceneries to which I then added the edited footage of Barry I selected ( sadly there are no videos of the band) and also 4 photos I found online of The Verge , one with Barry, I believe Gordon McIntosh shared these photos, there is a Facebook page of the Verge. It is called The Verge 1967-1972
Barry performed with this band in the UK, Germany even on TV like Top Of The Pops, sadly the videos were lost and there is still some hope ( as Gordon wrote when they were touring all over the continent people with movie cameras took footage of the performances)
I feel there must be someone who still has some old videos or footage of those days, perhaps lying in the box. If you do have any footage please share it with the fans.
Here is a bit of info about the band and how it came to be that Barry performed with this band. Now anyone who knew Barry at the time, would know as it was no secret that he really did want to perform with a band and The Verge found out that Barry needed a backing band for a 3week tour in Italy in 1970. The opening night (according to this website by Gordon McIntosh) was a disaster. Perhaps because the band was not used to all the attention from the press , cameras , TV and nerve and Barry was wondering if he should cancel the tour however on the second night at a football stadium in a place called Rappallo in front of 13.000 and they were topping the bill along with Shocking Blue and the Equals. They opened up with 'Eloise' and it went really well. The rest of the tour went so well. When back in London they were there as Barry was opening for a night club called Bumpers. The Verge continued being Barry's backing band for a couple of years on and off doing tours with him around Europe and a lot of gigs all over England, mainly on the club circuit like the Fiesta in Sheffield or the Cavendish in Blackburn with some of the top pop acts and comedians of the day.
Barry enjoyed the 'band' experience so much that they ended up writing songs together and he wanted to change his image and become part of the band but his record company wouldn’t allow this. We recorded a couple of songs then Decca decided to put all new artists on hold and concentrate on their established acts. The songs with the band were recorded in De Lane Lea Studios London and were produced by Martin Birch who also produced Deep Purple. A few other songs were recorded in IBC Studios, but only 2 have been saved from there: 'Loneliest Night of the Year' and 'Moonshine Girl'.
Paraphrasing some of what Barry said about working , writing with The Verge in his 2017 Interview with Strange Brew: Barry talked about the band members of The Verge
"They were Scottish guys. Really nice guys. I went up there and we wrote and we put a whole series of tracks together and we played them to Polydor who absolutely hated them and said ‘We’re never going to release this new thing. This is far too progressive and heavy for you and it isn’t exactly what we want from you at all.’
I had total rows with them (Polydor). Eventually they did release them in dribs and drabs. It was a direction that I wanted to go in musically and I was very happy with that but the record company, as usual, didn’t really want to know.
They wanted me to stick to a certain formula .They thought it was too risky to come out with tracks like this. The thing is when you write, you don’t really have any sort of, I don’t know, it’s just something you do very naturally and those songs came very, very naturally."
I think had Barry been allowed to do what he wanted he would have had great success.
I have created this channel to honour Barry and Paul Ryan and their music , please subscribe or add a like (a thumbs up) and add a comment if you wish to.
I also have a Facebook page @ facebook.com/BarryRyan1948
Please come and check it out and perhaps follow this as I am trying to share as much as I can about these 2 talented twin musicians.
Please join me in remembering the music of our teenaged youth.
With lots of love from Tasmania,
Tia ❤️
