One of Africa's least-publicised wars is being fought in Chad. For ten years there's been organised rebellion in various parts of the country against the authority of the central government. The president, Francois Tombalbaye, has had to call in troops from France. The troops have been there a year now, and they claim considerable success in putting down the rebellion. The French withdrawal is planned for July, and if the security problem hasn't been solved by then the French, like the Americans in Vietnam, may face the dilemma of prolonging an unpopular war, or withdrawing and risking the loss of all they sought to preserve.
