Brisbane is a hub of (ethical) animal tourism, and while most people think to go to the Australia Zoo run by the Irwin family, the 1 hour drive out might be quite a commitment for people who may not have the time or resources. On the other hand, the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary is located in Brisbane and even if it's smaller, it still features many of Australia's famous local species like koalas, kangaroos, wombats, platypuses, and dingos. Buy a bag of kangaroo feed for $2, spot all of the koalas, and don't forget to stop at the gift shops, which are small but crammed with good products.
