Dugi Otok | Božava | Sali | Nature park Telaščica
The islands have long been known as an oasis of peace for travelers giving them an overwhelming experience of relaxation and spiritual and physical rest. Each island still has its „wild“ side as true evidence of the constant activities of unstoppable forces of nature-the the sea and the wind.
Dugi Otok is a true example of a place where these two opposites are most evident. Picturesque villages and secluded beaches collide with majestic cliffs and lush vegetation.
All you have to do is spread a map and look for Croatia, the ancient Zadar, and Dugi Otok.
Geographically, it is an island of great diversity and contrast, and the largest island among the North Dalmatian islands. It justifies its name (long island) with a length of about 45 km and it is between 1 and 4 km wide, with the highest peak Vela Straža (338 m). The coast of the island facing the open sea is characterized by sharp contrasts: the part that is located in the Nature Park is mostly steep and dominated by beautiful cliffs, while on the southeast side of the island one can find quiet coves and the sandy beach Sakarun. The island's beauty is an ideal place for swimming and enjoying the purity of the sea and the beauty of nature.
Fans of active vacation will find satisfaction by exploring the island across the arranged and marked hiking trails or on excursions to the Nature Park Telašćica and the National Park Kornati. During the year a variety of sporting events are organized and available are also mountain tracks and a climbing area. For those who want to explore the mysterious depths of the sea, can visit some of the most beautiful diving sites of Dugi Otok, such as the underwater cave Brbinjšćica or the islet Mežanj.
Nature park Telašćica
Nature Park Telašćica is located in the southeastern part of the island and with the surrounding waters as well as 13 islands, islets, and rocks it makes a miraculous harmony of nature on 70,5 km². The contrasts of nature are very expressed here with peaceful bays and rugged cliffs, forests of Aleppo pine on one side, and Holm oak on the other side, the area of cultivated fields of vineyards and olive-trees, as well as the area of rocky meadows. The Mediterranean vegetation is represented in the park with more than 400 plant species as well as numerous rare and endemic plants that have been recorded. The underwater world is home to about 250 plants and 300 animal organisms, including the now depleted red coral and the carnivorous sponge. The park is a haven for the 14 island donkeys, which roam freely in the bay Mir.
The park is characterized by three phenomena: The Telašćica bay - one of the safest, the most beautiful and largest natural ports in the Adriatic, the cliffs of the island Dugi Otok or locally called "Stene" rising up to 200 m over the sea, and vertically falling down 90 m into the sea, and the Salt Lake “Mir” with fine curative gray silt.
