The year 1066 is perhaps the most famous date in English history, for the great battle fought on Senlac Hill in October that year effectively ended the Anglo-Saxon way of life. William Duke Of Normandy – soon to be known as William the Conqueror – landed his troops near Hastings on the south coast of England where he was met by the weary army of King Harold II. It was a battle that defined the savagery of combat in the Middle Ages, the outcome of which was decided by a stroke of tactical brilliance by William.

The remarkable Bayeaux Tapestry has added to the myths and legends that surround the battle, all of which are dispelled or proved during this episode of Line Of Fire.
