This short watercolor lesson shows a two-step approach to painting poppies.
The first flower is painted in grayscale to understand volume, light, and shadow without the distraction of color. Using transparent, diluted layers, depth and contrast are built gradually with very limited means.
The second poppy is then painted in red. Because the structure is already understood, color can grow freely — gaining intensity, warmth, and life through layered washes without flattening the petals.
This process demonstrates how clarity and awareness in the early stages allow color to become expressive rather than decorative.
