Evander is a mining town in Mpumalanga South Africa, and is situated approximately 8 km northwest of Secunda.
The town was named after Evelyn Anderson, the wife of Peter Anderson , who was one of the directors of mining magnet named, the Union Corporation.
Mining started in 1955 through their subsidiary Winkelhaak Mines Ltd, and today, the Evander mine is currently operating in its 9th shaft and employs around 3,300 people. The Kimberley Reef in the Evander Basin produced over 16000 kg of gold between 2008 and 2010. This operation, amongst others are now owned by Harmony Gold mine.
The town covers an area of 23.7 Square kilometres and is home to a population of 10,166 people.
The town has a 5 primary schools, a high school (Evander High School) and also hosts one of the four campuses of the Gert Sibande College, (originally the Evander Technical Institute).
