In World War II, a significant number of Cossacks, a traditionally militarized East Slavic group originating in what is now Ukraine and Southern Russia, fought alongside the German Army (Wehrmacht) and later the Waffen-SS against the Soviet Union.

Reasons for collaboration

Cossacks, particularly the Don, Kuban, and Terek Cossacks, had a history of conflict with the Soviet government following the Russian Civil War.

German strategy and recruitment
The Germans exploited the Cossacks' anti-Soviet sentiment to recruit them for military units. Cossack units were initially formed from defectors, prisoners of war, and volunteers.

German officers, some with knowledge of Russian, led the Cossack units. The Wehrmacht formed the 1st Cossack Division in 1943, comprising several Cossack cavalry regiments.

Later, the Cossack formations were incorporated into the Waffen-SS as the XV SS Cossack Cavalry Corps.
