Malaysia’s former prime minister Najib Razak has been sentenced to a further 15 years in prison and fined $2.8 billion after being convicted of abuse of power and money laundering in the massive 1MDB corruption scandal.
The ruling, delivered by the Kuala Lumpur High Court, is one of the most consequential verdicts in Malaysia’s political history. Malaysian and U.S. investigators say at least $4.5 billion was stolen from 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), a state fund Najib co-founded during his time in office.
In this video, Najib’s lawyer Tan Sri Mohamed Shafee Abdullah speaks to the media outside the court, emphasizing that he will continue to demand his client’s rights through all available legal channels following the verdict.
