My wife and I traveled on the California Zephyr out to San Francisco and had to stop at Alcatraz.
The behind the scenes tour was cool, but I wish there would have been just a couple more spots to see. The building is in pretty decent shape in some places and other areas, not so much and could be dangerous. Be sure to watch Clint Eastwood's Escape from Alcatraz before you go so you recognize some areas.
