Please join Dr. April Spencer in offering love, prayers and support for @cnn anchor @sarasidnertv who courageously announced that she was recently diagnosed with stage three breast cancer at the end of her broadcast. Of note, In the United States, 300,000 new cases diagnosed each year with 40K deaths. African Americans bear a disproportionate share of the cancer burden, having the highest death rate and shortest survival of any racial or ethnic group for most cancers. The causes of these inequalities are complex but there are three takeaways that apply to us all…
1. Get screened: early detection means better protection!
2. If you get a call back go back: if you’re screening mammogram is abnormal and you a callback for additional imaging and a possible biopsy, the sooner you return for follow-up, the sooner we can begin diagnosing and treating the breast cancer. This helps you have better outcomes with less toxicity/ side effects.
3. If you see something or feel something, SAY something: know your body, trust your gut…don’t try to talk yourself out of it when you know something doesn’t feel right and don’t be afraid to get a second opinion, it could just save your life!
