Hey hey fellow road warriors and Silk Road dreamers! We’ve made it—after winding our way through the melon-scented madness of the Fergana Valley, dodging herds, potholes, and the occasional overenthusiastic donkey, Shehzadi (our queenly Toyota Tundra) and Chetak (our fearless Hilux steed) have officially rolled into the heart of Samarkand, Uzbekistan!
🎬 In today’s video, we head straight out to the crown jewel of Samarkand: Registan Square—and oh man, it did not disappoint.
This place is like a time machine wrapped in a mosaic. You’ve got three massive madrassahs standing guard like ancient sentinels:
✨ Ulugh Beg Madrassah – Built by the star-gazing king himself, this was basically the Harvard of the 15th century. Ulugh Beg didn’t care much for war—he was too busy charting the stars and being an intellectual badass. The muqarnas (that’s fancy tile stalactites for the non-nerds) and the perfectly symmetrical arches make you wonder how people in 1417 were already slaying architectural geometry.
🦁 Sher-Dor Madrassah – Now this one’s got lions. Yep, lions chasing deer on a madrassah. Islamic art usually avoids living creatures, but this 17th-century rebel of a building said “hold my plov.” The vibrant orange-and-blue tile work makes it look like the building itself is mid-roar.
💎 Tilya-Kori Madrassah – “Tilya-Kori” literally means gilded, and folks, she did not hold back. Step inside and you’re greeted with a golden dome interior so blinged out you’ll feel underdressed in hiking boots. There’s intricate floral patterns, Quranic calligraphy, and more shimmer than a Bollywood wedding.
🌅 And then—just as the sun dips low—the whole square transforms. Golden hour hits the mosaics like a spotlight from heaven. The blues deepen, the domes glow, and the silence? Epic. It’s like the whole city is holding its breath.
🎆 But wait—it gets better. Stick around in the video for the Light & Sound Show (separate video) which is basically history meets rave. With narration booming through the square, we watched laser projections paint stories across the ancient walls—astronomers, traders, kings, and invaders all dancing to traditional Uzbek beats. It’s loud. It’s dramatic. It’s amazing. It’s like Netflix made a documentary and decided the Registan was the set.
As night falls and we finally stagger back to our beds, stunned by beauty and buzzing from history overload, we know one thing: we’re gonna need a strong cup of Uzbek green tea tomorrow. Because we’re not done with Samarkand yet. Oh no. The adventure continues in the morning.
