February 6th is Waitangi day. It commemorates the day in 1840 when (some) Maori chiefs signed the treaty with the English crown. The purpose was to create unity between the Maori owners of the country and the English (who soon took over and outnumbered the locals in around1870).
The treaty is still regarded as the NZ "Constitution" but it is constantly challenged. That is why Waitangi day is not only a day of celebration but also of protests.
