Baraque des Rognes and Nid d'Aigle - Chamonix Hiking & Trail Running

This is arguably the most spectacular route on the southern end of the Chamonix Valley taking us high above Les Houches to an altitude of 2786 meters. The highlights include the splendid views from Mont Lachat, the impressive scenery and challenging terrain on the climb up to the Baraque Forestiere des Rognes, the food at the Refuge du Nid d'Aigle and the beautiful moraine of the Bionnassay Glacier. This trail is highly technical and the route going up from the Col du Mont Lachat to the Baraque Forestiere is steep and rocky. The route has to be snow-free or you could get into some serious trouble. The path through the boulder fields are marked with yellow painted dots on the rocks. If you cannot see these markers then its a recipe for disaster. There also a lot of large drops and long ladders. Kids and dogs cannot go on this route. You need to check trail conditions before setting out and if you run into snow cover then do the smart thing and simply turn back. The most realistic window to do this trail using the Bellevue cable car is from August when the snow is hopefully melted to mid September when the Bellevue cable car closes.
