A family in Thika is crying out for justice after their kin, Patrick Kinyanjui, was severely burned while being held at Thika Level 5 Hospital, simply because he couldn’t pay his hospital bill.
The 35-year-old had been admitted over a month ago with stomach complications and later underwent successful surgery. But due to lack of funds, he was detained within the hospital—a practice still happening in some public facilities.
According to his uncle, Kimemia Mungai, the family learned of Patrick’s burn injuries through a concerned stranger—not the hospital.
Hospital insiders allege that Patrick tried to escape by climbing a perimeter fence, but was caught by a cleaner. What followed has left many in disbelief, one staff member is accused of pouring a corrosive chemical on him, burning him from the neck down to the waist.
Patrick’s sister, Jane Muthoni, says the family is devastated. Orphans with no legal power, they now feel helpless, asking: why should someone suffer just for being poor?
Relatives are now demanding answers and the release of CCTV footage to expose the truth. Thika Level 5 Hospital has remained silent, referring the matter to Kiambu’s Health CEC, who has yet to respond.
Thika Sub-County Police Commander, Lawrence Muchangi, confirmed that investigations are underway, with detectives dispatched to gather evidence.
