HOW TO PASS YOUR PLACEMENT interviews for nursing students

This video will talk you through how to plan and pass your placement by organising your assessment interviews, for nursing students. You as students are expected to be responsible for your own learning and proactively seek out opportunities and experiences that match the level of your practice. I thought it might be helpful to set you up with a blueprint for your assessments - as the focus of passing your placement has always been stressful for student nurses!

I talk you through the APIE model and link it to your placements - think in simple terms; placements are there to provide you with real-life experience to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care, but you can actually use this APIE process to your placements too;
ASSESS what is available to you on the placement,
PLAN how you are going to achieve your learning outcomes,
IMPLEMENT that plan (your interview or learning agreement)
EVALUATE how you are doing - this comes from your FEEDBACK and your meetings with your assessors and supervisors in practice.

Break your placement up, just as your assessment is; week 1 - orientation and initial interview, within this time you need to be asking yourself:
What and I planning to learn here? What are my expectations and attitudes for this placement?
What learning opportunities are there to meet my competencies?
Also if you have been out on placement before, note the feedback you received - anything to learn from this?

When it comes to your first encounter with your assessor, some questions you could ask to show how proactive you are:
What do you expect from me during this placement?
Is there a student pack/info folder about this learning environment?
How often will we work together? Will this always be directly together?
Is there anything specific to this area you think I should review?
How do you like to set the dates for our interviews/meetings?

Midpoint - before your midpoint interview, you should be reviewing your objectives every few days - make sure you are keeping yourself on track with what you have set yourself. Ask yourself:
What have I learned? What do I still need to learn?
What am I learning about myself?

Final interview time - before your interview, check that you have gathered all your relevant feedback from other staff, maybe patient feedback if that is something you can get, you may be required to complete a reflection of the placement before your assessment, and be truthful with your critical reflection (but don’t be hard on yourself!)
What are you most proud of from this placement?
What did you struggle with the most?
Have you learned anything new about yourself?
