NASA Commentator Lori Meggs at the Marshall Space Flight Center talks to Laurel Karr and Richard Grugel, two materials scientists at Marshall who are using results from an investigation called Materials on the International Space Station Experiment, or MISSE, which is shedding light on technologies for future space travel to Mars. Ionic liquids may prove to be a valuable tool when it comes to designing tanks for spacecraft or extracting oxygen and other elements from the Martian soil. It’s a special class of liquids that are also environmentally friendly.
