The father of public Islam in South Africa, Imam Abdullah ibn Qadi Abdus Salam, also known as Tuan Guru (Master Teacher), came to the Cape of Good Hope, the Dutch outpost at the Southernmost tip of Africa, towards the end of the 18th century C.E.
In this video, Princeton University Professor of History Michael Laffan, seated alongside veteran journalist Shafiq Morton, details the reasons behind Tuan Guru's exile from the island of Tidore, Indonesia, along with three others. This video was recorded at the grave of Tuan Guru at the Tana Baru Cemetary in Cape Town, South Africa.
