This close-up shows a downed Ukrainian FP-1 kamikaze drone — a simple wooden-box fuselage with straight wings, a small piston engine up front, and basic GPS gear. The clip focuses on the intact prop, control surfaces, and the crude but effective construction used to make these drones cheap and easy to mass-produce.
The FP-1 can carry about 120 kg of explosives and has an estimated range of up to 1,600 km, using inertial navigation with GPS corrections for decent precision. Built from plywood, foam and light composites around a hobby-style engine, the design sacrifices sophistication for cost and numbers — and reports say production reached thousands per month. Many downings show soft impacts consistent with electronic-jamming or signal loss rather than explosive hits.
The key point: the FP-1 is a “poor man’s cruise missile” — inexpensive, expendable, and capable of striking deep behind enemy lines. Its rise forces defenders to rethink air defenses and countermeasures against mass-produced, low-cost threats.
