CONCORDE TAKES A BOW
Why does Concorde have a droop nose? The sharp angle of take off and landing in a delta wing aircraft means that the pilot cannot see the runway. For certification as a passenger plane the nose had to lower.
Pre-production Concorde 101 had a redesigned nose section that incorporated a fully transparent visor to replace the metal ones fitted to the prototypes. They were not popular with the test pilots as they provided very poor forward vision.
The new nose section was designed by Marshall of Cambridge and has lowering angles of 5˚, 12˚ and 17.5˚. During testing, 17.5 ˚ proved to be a droop too far!
Concorde 101 is part of the British Airliner Collection based at IWM Duxford and is one of the most popular exhibits. It offers a rare opportunity to board and experience the interior of an aircraft which not only conducted five years of rigorous testing from 1971 but also set the speed record of 1,450mph or Mach 2,23, flying at 63,700 feet.
