The 3-4 defense has grown in popularity across the NFL in recent years. The reason is because of the versatility it provides, both in terms of different blitz calls and coverages that the defense can employ.
I had a chance to talk with former Steelers head coach Bill Cowher about the defenses he used to run in Pittsburgh, and he thought the key to their success was their ability to put more linebackers, and as a result more athletes, on the field. No matter what alignments and personnel groups an offense threw at them, they were able to adjust without compromising the integrity of their defensive scheme.
