It was a weekend of firsts in Orbisonia, PA as the East Broad Top Railroad officially welcomed steam back to the railroad on February 18/19 for the first time since 2011.
Many of you know the story - a former coal-hauling narrow gauge railroad, shut down in 1956 - reborn as a tourist-hauling railroad in 1960, all the way through to 2011, when the railroad was shut down again, seemingly for good this time. Fast forward to 2020, the railroad was purchased and started to re-open again under auspices of the EBT Foundation. After a multi-year restoration, steam returned for the Winter Spectacular, and a pair of steam-powered freight trains were run in the morning, for the benefit of those trackside, and a select few that purchased tickets to ride in the caboose each morning. So what were the "firsts" mentioned earlier?
First revenue steam-powered trains since 2011 along the line.
2-8-2 #16 was restored to operation and is running for the first time since 1956 - was one of two engines that did not operate at all during the first tourist-railroad era.
You get to ride along in this video as one of THE FIRST paying passengers behind this locomotive since 1956.
So, enjoy this look at "Steam-Powered Freight on the East Broad Top"!
