Hey everyone! Here's the next episode of Chordplay with Joe Pass Jazz Chord Secrets. Over the years as a guitar instructor, I've had so many students ask for "jazzy stuff" or "show me some jazz chords." This fact, along with noticing a number of requests from viewers asking for more "jazzy stuff" led me to create this tribute to one of the greatest jazz guitarists in the history of the instrument - Mr. Joe Pass.

Joe Pass is a legendary jazz guitarist and worked with a who's-who of jazz music legends. On his own, his music and mountain of groundbreaking albums reveal a beyond-talented and forward-thinking guitarist, literally filled with great ideas and genre-stretching abilities. He was much more than just a soloist, as Joe was able to capture the sound of an entire band playing, while (usually) performing all of the parts himself. His solo guitar albums are an unreal six-string treat for the ears!

The ideas in this lesson came from a variety of sources, including a few ideas pulled from two classic Guitar Player Magazine lessons - one from 1984, along with Joe's 1986 cover story feature (with Soundpage!). The ideas shared here include an amazing chord exercise/warmup, Joe's elusive "cross-barring" technique for fretting chords, a common jazz concept featuring the use of common tones between the chords in the progression, a variety of Joe Pass chord voicings surrounding a single key/tonality, an ultra-jazzy walking bass comping riff, and much more!
