Bonsai isn't always a solo endeavor - sometimes, you can only get by with a little help from a good bonsai friend! For this large Yamadori (collected) Lodgepole Pine, Eric knew he needed a second person to help plan and execute a successful design. Sam, who is currently the President of the Bonsai Society of San Francisco, was more than happy to help. This video shows more than 5 hours of their hard work, in less than 10 minutes!
50 Initial evaluation
26 Small wedge cut on the low branch
11 Simplifying the crown structure
30 Second wedge cut, this time on the top
55 Bending the top branches to form the apex
41 Final adjustments
28 Eric shares highlights of the discussions he and Sam had over the course of their 5 hour working session, including what to do with the unusual low branch - they ultimately decided to use it for back branching; wedge cut at the base; wiring decisions; and the primary branch design with second wedge cut needed.
04 Next steps for this tree include carving the cut off top, and reviewing the potted angle for what is really the front of the tree.
