Police Officer Arrested for Assaulting Lawyer Released on Bail in Mount Lavinia Case

The Police Constable accused of assaulting a lawyer within the Mount Lavinia (Galkissa) Magistrate's Court premises has been released on bail. The order was issued today (October 13) by Mount Lavinia Magistrate Pasan Amarasekara. The constable was released on two personal sureties of LKR 100,000 each.

During the hearing, the Police filed a separate 'B Report' alleging that the lawyer, Gunaratne Wanninayake, used obscene language against the officer at the time of the incident. Furthermore, the Police informed the court that the lawyer has not yet appeared in court or provided a statement to the police regarding the assault. The Mount Lavinia Police are continuing their investigations into the controversial incident that stirred national debate in the legal fraternity.
