What is a Surgical Technician?
A Surgical Technician, also referred to as an Operating Room Technician, assists with all manner of operating room (OR) procedures and patient care. They are critical to pre-operative processes and ensure the sterilization of equipment and the room itself. As a part of their pre-operative duties, this position will organize equipment and carefully prepare for surgery to begin. Surgical Technicians are also fundamental to Intraoperative procedures. During surgery, they will often prepare and administer medications, assist in retracting tissues and pass surgical tools to the surgeon or surgical assistant. Finally, Surgical Techs are called upon in the postoperative to apply bandages and assist in removing patients from the OR. In many cases, they will also participate in sterilizing and disposing of equipment after surgery is complete.
