This is flight 5 of 24 from my recent trip where I flew around the Caribbean. In January, I set out to fly to as many places in the Caribbean as possible, and after 12 days, 13 airlines, 24 flights, and over 10,000 miles, I landed back in Kansas City, Missouri after visiting 14 different countries & territories. Flight 5 Fun Fact – Grand Case Airport or Grand Case-Espérance Airport is a very interesting airport with a runway only 3,937 feet long. Because of this relatively short runway aircraft departing the airport perform a very unique operation on the runway that is rarely seen anywhere else in the world. Once lined up for departure, the aircraft will reverse their engines and "power back" until their main gear tires are right on the edge of the pavement. As we line up in this video you can see and hear this process happening as we stop, the engines power up, and we actually reverse into our takeoff position. You can see ATR 72 and ATR 42 markings on the runway so the pilots know exactly where to stop their nose gear so their main gear are on the edge of the pavement. Only then, once all available runway is being used, will aircraft then depart. This is a very usual and unique operation to be captured on film!
